Poggio Pagliaio is the most distinctive wine in the San Gregorio portfolio — a blend of Barbera and Colorino that steps outside the Sangiovese-centred Chianti tradition and demonstrates the estate's willingness to explore the full range of indigenous Tuscan varieties at its disposal. The name references a specific topographic feature of the Siena hills estate — a golden, hay-coloured hill — and the wine carries both the warmth and the particular character of that specific place.
The two varieties contribute complementary qualities to the blend: Barbera brings the high natural acidity, the vivid colour, and the rich dark fruit that make it one of the most expressive indigenous Italian red grapes across its various regional expressions; Colorino — a variety more commonly used as a blending component in Chianti for its deep colour and tannin contribution — here takes a primary role alongside Barbera in a combination that produces something of genuine individual character.
The harvest takes place in early October — later than the Chianti grapes, reflecting the specific ripening cycle of these two varieties on the Siena hill estate. Fermentation in steel at twenty-six to twenty-eight degrees for fifteen days extracts the full colour and aromatic potential of the blend. Maturation in barriques follows, along with six months of bottle ageing before release.
The wine presents with a lively intense red colour that announces its personality immediately. Mature red fruits with vanilla and spice tones on the nose — the contribution of the barrique ageing to the naturally expressive Barbera-Colorino blend. On the palate, personality and character with structured and well-balanced tannins complete the picture of a wine of genuine distinction and genuine individuality.
