The Coda di Volpe of the Lavorgna Family estate is the entry point into a portfolio built by one of Campania's most significant researchers and advocates of indigenous variety viticulture. Giuseppe Lavorgna — the scholar who formally established the name Camaiola through research at the CNR and subsequently through the DOC — approaches all the varieties in his estate's range with the same intellectual rigour and passionate commitment, and the Coda di Volpe is no exception.
Coda di Volpe — literally Fox's Tail, named for the distinctive elongated shape of the grape cluster — is one of the oldest indigenous varieties of Campania, with documented cultivation in the region extending back over two thousand years. At the Lavorgna estate in San Lorenzello, on the fertile marl-clay hills of the Telesina Valley between Monte Acero and Monte Erbano at Apennine altitude, the variety develops in conditions of mineral richness and climatic specificity that produce a white of genuine territorial character.
The wine presents with an intense straw yellow colour, often with golden reflections, that signals a wine of body and presence. The nose expresses an elegant and delicate bouquet — notes of white flowers, citrus, pear, and hints of hazelnut and herbs that are characteristic of Coda di Volpe at its most expressive. The palate is fresh and savoury, with a pleasant structure and a persistence that recalls the mineral notes and slightly smoky character of the volcanic terroir that underlies the Telesina Valley's marl-clay hills.
This mineral smokiness is one of the most distinctive qualities of Coda di Volpe from the Lavorgna estate — a reminder that the soil of Campania, however far from the active volcanic systems of Vesuvius or the Campi Flegrei, carries the geological memory of volcanic origin in its mineral content and its aromatic expression.
