Nylos is the Falanghina white of the Etel estate in Alto Cilento — a wine of organic production from one of the most dramatically situated wine territories in southern Italy, where the high hills of Palinuro carry the legend of Ulysses and the geological reality of rocky, ventilated, northwest-facing slopes at 180 to 250 metres above sea level. The combination of this specific altitude, this specific soil, and this specific climate gives Nylos a character that distinguishes it from Falanghina produced in the warmer, lower-lying parts of Campania.
The Falanghina grape is one of Campania's most celebrated indigenous whites — historically significant, widely cultivated, and capable of producing wines of genuine complexity and longevity in the right conditions. In the Etel estate's rocky, clayey terroir of Alto Cilento, with its particularly dry and ventilated climate and northwest orientation, the grape develops a mineral precision and aromatic freshness that the variety's most celebrated appellations in the Benevento area do not always match.
The production process reflects the estate's commitment to capturing the natural character of the grape with minimal intervention. After cold maceration for six to eight hours, the must undergoes controlled temperature fermentation for approximately one month, followed by ageing in stainless steel on the fine lees for about six months. A minimum of three months in bottle precedes release — a total maturation period that ensures the wine's freshness is preserved while allowing its complexity to develop.
In the glass, Nylos presents with the clarity and freshness characteristic of well-made Falanghina: fruity, floral, and mineral on the nose, with the particular mineral note that the rocky Cilento soil reliably contributes. The palate is balanced and fresh, with a structure that makes it suitable as an aperitif, alongside seafood, and with the full range of fish preparations that the Campanian coastal tradition offers.
