The Rosso di Montalcino DOC of Corte dei Venti is traditionally described as Brunello's younger sibling — a wine of the same territory, the same essential character, and many of the same grape varieties, but produced for earlier consumption and in a style designed to offer the pleasures of Montalcino without the patience that the Brunello requires. In the hands of Corte dei Venti, this younger sibling is a wine of considerable generosity and genuine quality.
The blend combines Sangiovese Grosso (60%), Merlot (20%), Cabernet Sauvignon (10%), and Syrah (10%) — a more diverse variety mix than the pure Sangiovese Grosso of the Brunello DOCG wines, bringing to the Rosso di Montalcino DOC a broader aromatic range and a textural accessibility that the Sangiovese-only approach cannot always deliver at this stage of development. Each variety contributes its specific quality: the Sangiovese Grosso provides the territorial identity and the acidity that defines Montalcino; the Merlot adds generosity; the Cabernet Sauvignon contributes structure and aromatic complexity; the Syrah brings warmth and dark fruit.
The ageing protocol reflects the wine's position in the estate's range: twelve months in 500 to 250 litre oak drums — smaller than the large Slavonian barrels of the Brunello, providing more wood contact in a shorter time — followed by at least four months in bottle at controlled temperature. The result is ample, persistent, and lively, with a thin and fine tannin structure that makes it pleasant from a relatively young age.
This is a wine of round warmth and full aromas that make it very inviting and pleasant — qualities that translate directly into versatility at the table. From grilled meats to braised preparations, from aged cheeses to rich pasta, Rosso di Montalcino accommodates the full range of Italian cuisine with the generosity characteristic of its Montalcino origin.
