Vigna Palazzina is the second Sangiovese expression of the Tenuta Casali estate — the wine named for the Palazzina vineyard that receives more extended oak treatment than the Vigna Baruccia, producing a wine of greater complexity and longer ageing potential from the same Romagna Sangiovese base. Where Baruccia speaks of accessibility and immediate pleasure, Palazzina speaks of development and the particular depth that extended French oak contact imparts to a well-structured Sangiovese from the estate's mineral fluvial terrace soils.
The production follows the same foundation — traditional fermentation with post-fermentation macerations — but the oak treatment is significantly more intensive: thirteen months in new and used French oak barrels, compared to five months in used oak for the Baruccia. This extended new oak contact introduces a layer of tannin extraction, vanilla-spice complexity, and aromatic depth that transforms the wine's character substantially, giving it the structure and the aromatic breadth to develop meaningfully in bottle over time.
The Casali family's fifty-hectare estate on the old fluvial terrace of Mercato Saraceno, with its underlying gravel and significant day-night temperature variation, provides the raw material of genuine quality that this extended ageing treatment requires. Vigna Palazzina is the wine through which the estate demonstrates that the Romagna Sangiovese — sometimes underestimated in comparison to its Tuscan counterpart — is capable of producing wines of genuine ambition and genuine depth when the farming and the cellar work are applied with equal care.
