Vigna Baruccia is the first Sangiovese expression of the Tenuta Casali estate in Mercato Saraceno — a wine named for a specific vineyard on the old fluvial terrace that the estate occupies, with its underlying layers of gravel and the significant temperature fluctuation between day and night that imparts intensity of aromas and flavours to all the estate's wines. It is the most accessible and most immediately engaging of the estate's four Sangiovese expressions.
The Casali family's history in Romagna extends from grandfather Mario's farm of 1940 through the estate's establishment by Valerio and Paolo in 1978 to the current generation — Silvia, Francesco, and Daniele — who continue the family's love for the land and its wines with an equal commitment to innovation and to the expression of Romagna's specific winemaking identity. On fifty hectares with twenty under vine, the estate produces wines across the full range of Romagna's indigenous and adapted variety palette.
Vigna Baruccia is produced from Sangiovese through traditional fermentation with post-fermentation macerations, aged for five months in used French oak barrels. The used barrels — as opposed to new oak — contribute a gentle integration of wood character without the aggressive tannin extraction and vanilla dominance that new wood would impose, allowing the Sangiovese's natural fruit and the specific character of the Baruccia vineyard to remain the primary voices in the wine.
This is Romagna's Sangiovese in its most honest and most accessible form — the grape that defines the regional red wine tradition, expressed with the particular mineral intensity that the old fluvial terrace soils and the estate's day-night temperature variation deliver. Vinified and aged in the family wine cellar, which is equipped with a photovoltaic system reflecting the estate's commitment to sustainable production.
