Mario Magnum is the most extraordinary wine in the Tenuta Casali portfolio — a Sangiovese produced exclusively in favourable vintages, in magnum format only, with a production of just three hundred and thirty magnums each year. It is named for grandfather Mario Casali, who began the family's agricultural adventure in the hills of Mercato Saraceno in 1940, and whose dream was continued by his grandsons Valerio and Paolo and now by the current generation of Silvia, Francesco, and Daniele. In Mario's name, the family makes their most serious and most personal wine.
The production is one of exceptional commitment: traditional fermentation with post-fermentation macerations, followed by thirteen months of ageing in twenty-hectolitre wooden vats. The twenty-hectolitre vat is a vessel between the large Slavonian barrel of the Brunello tradition and the small barrique — large enough to avoid aggressive oak extraction, small enough to allow meaningful wood contact and gentle oxidative development. The result is a wine of the kind that the estate describes as an ATTO — an act, a performance, a statement that each vintage becomes its own numbered production.
Only three hundred and thirty magnums are produced each year, and only in the vintages that meet the estate's exacting standards. The magnum format is itself a statement: larger bottles age more slowly and more gracefully than standard bottles, and a wine intended to represent the Casali family's finest and most personal expression deserves the slower development and the longer life that the 1.5-litre format provides.
Mario Magnum is a wine for the most significant occasions, for the cellar investments that express genuine commitment, and for those who understand that the finest bottles are often those produced with the greatest constraint and the deepest personal meaning.
