Filippo II is the flagship red of Tenute Cuffaro — the quintessential expression, in the estate's own words, of the Nero d'Avola grape, and one of the most serious statements that western Sicily makes in red wine. The name carries weight: Filippo II of Aragon, King of Sicily in the sixteenth century, governed an island whose agricultural traditions were already ancient when he ruled, and whose wines were already of consequence in the Mediterranean trade. A wine named for him makes a claim about ambition.

Nero d'Avola is the great red grape of Sicily — southern, sun-saturated, built on structure and warmth, capable of producing wines of genuine complexity and significant longevity when grown in conditions of quality and vinified with care. On the Scala dei Turchi plateau of Tenute Cuffaro, where the soil is naturally rich in humus, the ventilation is constant, and the combination of sun exposure and organic management produces grapes of natural health and concentration, Nero d'Avola finds conditions that bring out its most complete character.

The wine presents in the glass with the deep, vivid ruby of Nero d'Avola at its most expressive. The nose is immediately commanding: fearfulness and elegance coexist, as the estate describes it, in a succession of spices, flowers, and red fruits that arrive in waves. The aromatic complexity is genuine — this is not a single note but a conversation, evolving and layering as the wine opens in the glass.

On the palate, Filippo II delivers the full statement that Nero d'Avola at its best is capable of: alcohol balanced against purebred tannins, marked minerality from the plateau's specific geology, and a finish that is long, warm, and persistent. The tannins are structured for ageing — this is a wine that can evolve for years in bottle, softening and deepening over time. At the table, it meets its best expression alongside elegant meats and aged cheese plates: preparations of substance and character that can sustain and enhance what Filippo II brings to the encounter.
