Scarpa — Raffaele Noviello

Raffaele Noviello farms three organic hectares in Montefalcione and makes wines exclusively from native Irpinian varieties — with a willingness to experiment that produced one of Italy's first Metodo Classico wines from Greco di Tufo. His range spans the full ambition of Irpinia: Taurasi DOCG, Fiano di Avellino Riserva DOCG, Greco di Tufo DOCG, Matti Extra Dry (ancestral method, bottled on a specific night in October), and the A Caposott Metodo Ancestrale Aglianico. Organic. Distinctive. Innovative. Available through UniqueWines.

In the heart of Irpinia, in Montefalcione, for more than twenty years an independent winegrower has dedicated himself to offering emotion through his wines. Raffaele Noviello continues the love for the land and the vineyard of his father and grandfather, inheriting the passion for nature and a pronounced calling for viticulture that has made him a brilliant winemaker. His strong bond with his land and origins is reflected in the production of wines made exclusively from native varieties — typicity and territoriality define their identity, whether the well-known DOCG bottlings or his experimental releases.

Three hectares of vineyard are farmed under integrated pest management, with a drastic reduction in pesticides and herbicides that protects the groundwater. The estate is recognised as organic. And it is also innovative: Raffaele Noviello produced one of the first Metodo Classico wines made from Greco di Tufo — a creative act of real courage in an appellation defined by still whites.

The TAURASI DOCG is the estate's flagship: 100% Aglianico, ruby trending toward garnet with age, taking on orange highlights. Full-bodied, austere, full, and persistent. On the nose: sour cherry, underbrush, ethereal notes, pleasant and intense. On the palate: dry, full, harmonious, balanced, with a lovely persistence of ferrous notes and black pepper. Served at 16-18 degrees Celsius, its ageing potential is described as very long. The production process: destemming and skin maceration for two days at 5-6 degrees, gentle pressing, natural settling, double inoculation of selected yeasts, fermentation and ageing in French and Hungarian oak barriques for at least six months, bottling, and ageing in bottle for at least six months.

APIANUM RISERVA is the estate's Fiano di Avellino Riserva DOCG — from 100% Fiano, processed through destemming, gentle pressing, natural settling, and double inoculation of selected yeasts, with storage in steel tanks and fermentation at controlled temperature, aged in bottle for at least six months.

DONNA CARINA is the estate's Greco di Tufo DOCG — produced from 100% Fiano through a process that includes first fermentation at controlled temperature, second fermentation and prise de mousse via the long Martinotti Method for at least twelve months in autoclave, then ageing for at least six months in bottle. This is where Raffaele's innovation most clearly expresses itself.

MATTI EXTRA DRY is among the estate's most experimental releases: 100% Fiano, whole-cluster pressed, inoculated with selected yeasts, fermented at controlled temperature, with the end of fermentation and prise de mousse occurring directly in the bottle — bottled during the night between October 3rd and 4th, carrying approximately 2 bars of pressure. Caution is advised when uncorking. A CAPOSOTT METODO ANCESTRALE is the complementary ancestral method wine from 100% Aglianico DOP 2021 — racked into barrique of predominantly French oak, ruddy glow, magnetic red, elegant and soft on the palate, rich in aromas of red fruit and spice, with a full and lingering flavour.

Finally, SCURIA is the estate's most serious Aglianico: a wine with a ruddy glow, magnetic red, elegant and soft on the palate, with rich aromas of red fruit and spice. Full and lingering. Long ageing potential. Raffaele Noviello's Scarpa estate is available through UniqueWines.
